"The Knight's Bridle"
chess board

SEE PHOTO
"The Knight's bridle" is finished in black and white Ash wood ("natural" also available for light squares). The squares measure 2.25", making it a Tournament sized chess board. The finish is "satin" so it is less reflective. Squares are raised from border. It features an alternating color decorative edge around the squares and grooved
line detail on the outside border.
Proposed by Lutz Scholz.
Why black finished boards are hard to find ...
"There is a certain amount of time involved in the process
of making this board. I cannot vouch for other manufacturers,
but I doubt that 100$ will provide the same quality (solid
wood etc). All our boards are individually crafted, not mass-produced.
The problems involved in creating a board with black squares
(not dark brown)
are many. Sanding cannot be done after the squares have been
stained, so assembly is critical. It is easy to sell a board
cheaply if it is laminated (flat wood with patterns applied),
or even if one uses dark wood and makes the squares solid.
When you are dealing with black stained wood, all the pieces
have to be stained before assembly, and further sanding is
not possible. The border is made up of separate pieces that
have to be fitted individually adding to the complexity and
labor. Keep in mind also that most mass-produced boards may
not be made of Ash - or other North American hard woods -
because of availability and cost. If you want to go ahead
with our board, we can discuss the finer points of assembly,
detailing and finish."
